The Company currently has a late-stage product candidate, safinamide, in development, three further clinical-stage compounds and a promising pipeline of five earlier/preclinical compounds.Phase III trials of safinamide are currently ongoing for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). As per the agreement signed with Newron in 2006, Merck Serono, a division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has exclusive worldwide rights to develop, manufacture and commercialize the compound in PD, Alzheimer's disease, and other therapeutic applications. Newron is evaluating the further clinical development of ralfinamide in psychiatric diseases andpain. Although the compound did not show efficacy in the treatment of Neuropathic Low Back Pain, an independent Board recommended its further investigation due to a good overall efficacyand safety profile. Recently, Newron has been granted a licence from Merck KGaA to develop pruvanserin and sarizotan. Newron will be conducting further testing and analyses of results before moving into phase II trials in new indications.
